Explora II, the second ship in the MSC Group's new luxury brand Explora Journeys, will launch in the summer of 2024. The 922-passenger vessel is the sister ship to Explora I, which debuts in 2023, and will be followed each year by four more ships representing a total investment of Euros 3.5 billion. Explora I's delivery date was last pushed back from July 6th to July 24th (2023). The vessel was officially delivered from Fincantieri Monfalcone to MSC on July 20th. The ceremony was attended by Gianluigi Aponte (MSC Group's Founder and Chairman), Pierfrancesco Vago, Zoe Africa Vago (ship's godmother), Michael Ungerer (Explora Journeys), Pierroberto Folgiero (Fincantieri). The Nautilus Club hosts age-appropriate supervised activities (for children aged 6-17) including interactive gaming (on PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox), sports contests, fun workshops and games. This glamorous wake infinity pool wouldn’t be out of place in Bali, Cabo or Mykonos -- though you will likely hear Explora Journeys compare it to a super yacht. The pool is surrounded by plush double day beds sunken into the shallows of the water, with a sultry wake sightline. On our sailing, this exuberant space was well-used by passengers and was a favorite spot onboard for daytime fun and relaxation.
Midship on Lido Deck is the main swimming pool (indoor pool covered with a retractable glass roof) and its sunbathing area. The pool deck is served by the poolside bar Gelateria & Creperie (snacks and beverages) and the All-Day Dining Restaurant (indoor Lido buffet with an aft terrace/outdoor seating). At the stern is the Upper Aft Pool & Lounge (sundeck with open-air bar, 4-seat tables, a swimming pool and sunbathing area with daybeds and padded loungers). With 11 globally-inspired culinary options available, each focused on sourcing from sustainable and local-to-the-port vendors, it is impossible to go hungry. The most notable of which is Anthology, which brings in guest chefs to create a quarterly tasting menu.
It’s difficult to gauge a cruise line’s demographic on one of the first voyages. As well as paying passengers, there are cruise line executives and members of the travel trade onboard. Same-sex couples, families, couples in their 40s and 50s and plenty of the 60+ set, too. It’s one of the few luxury cruise lines that is catering to children, too, and there was a range of young travelers on our sailing, from babies to teens. The outdoor retreat (a row of sun loungers on the side of Deck 5) accessed off the thermal area, isn’t an inviting space. For whatever reason, this spot picks up a lot of wind and it’s shaded, too, making it feel dark and underwhelming, wedged between crew utility areas and the front of the ship.

They comprise 371 Ocean Terrace and Ocean Grand Terrace Suites, 67 Ocean Penthouses, 27 Ocean Residences and one Owner's Residence. The staterooms range in size from 377 square feet in the Ocean Terrace Suites category to 3,014 square feet for the Owner's Residence, making them among the most spacious in the industry. The spacious Mudroom on Deck 3 enables you to comfortably prepare for your Zodiac excursions, off-ship adventure options and shore landings. The Mudroom is conveniently located adjacent to the two Zodiac embarkation points.
